Dr. Michael Gross will present:

LOST IN TRANSLATION: ORSON WELLES, JACOB BURCKHARDT, AND THE (RE)WRITING OF
THE CIVILIZATION OF THE RENAISSANCE IN ITAL

What does underworld villain Harry Lime (Orson Welles) in the classic film noire The Third Man (Carol Reed, Director, 1949) set in post-WWII Vienna tell us about the Renaissance? And what does he have to do with Jacob Burckhardt’s monumental The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy (Basel, 1860)?

This presentation explores how Burckhardt’s original history was distorted in the one-and-only English translation of his work, the foundation nonetheless for our beliefs about the Italian Renaissance.
