The main campus library has a strong connection with resources available at Gale Primary Sources, and Gale is excited to bring representatives on campus for a free training workshop Sept. 10 and 11 at the library to encourage the use of their resources.

 

These workshop sessions are intended to enhance research and further the understanding and capabilities of Gale Primary Sources. Learn more about Gale: https://www.gale.com/primary-sources

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH

WORKSHOP 1: Faculty Panel

Time: 9:00am - 10:00am | Location: 2301 Joyner Library

  • Learn from your peers – how are they teaching and engaging students using Gale Primary Sources
  • Review available instructional support from Gale
  • Come prepared with questions or instructional examples

 

WORKSHOP 2: Researching with Gale Primary Sources: Historical Newspapers

Time: 10:30am - 11:30am | Location: 1020 Joyner Library

  • Gain familiarity with Primary Source collections to support topical inquiry
  • Highlight historical newspapers, like: Illustrated London News and British Library Newspapers and see how they fit with papers like the Times Digital Archive, Burney Newspapers, and Nichols Newspapers in terms of period of coverage, political bent, and regionality
  • Understand how to leverage Learning Centers to increase engagement in your classes

 

WORKSHOP 3: Lunch and Learn: Building Fluency with Gale Primary Sources for Library Folks

Time: 11:30am - 1:00pm | Location: 2301 Joyner Library

  • “Getting Started” with Gale Primary Sources
  • Explore accessibility, key features, and tools built within the Gale platforms that support users
  • Learn about interlinking features available between Gale Primary Sources and Gale eBooks
  • Introduction to the Gale Primary Sources Learning Centers
  • Highlight available support resources, including https://support.gale.com/

 

WORKSHOP 4: Introduction to the Digital Scholar Lab: the intuitive, cloud-based analysis tool that helps tell impactful, visual stories with data.

**note: bring laptops if available

Time: 1:00pm - 2:30pm | Location: 1020 Joyner Library

  • Familiarize yourself with the Digital Scholar Lab through a hands-on workshop covering the 3 iterative stages of the Lab: Build, Clean, Analyze
  • Learn the basics of text cleaning by creating your own cleaning configuration and applying it to a content set
  • Apply at least one of the following analysis tools to a self-made content: Ngrams, Topic Modeling, or Sentiment Analysis
  • Build an essay using the Research Projects feature in the Lab
  • Apply what you’ve learned to a course you are currently teaching or supporting

 

WORKSHOP 5: Deep Dive into Gale Primary Sources, an Interdisciplinary Approach

Time: 3:00pm - 4:00pm | Location: 2301 Joyner Library

  • Gain familiarity with Primary Source collections to support topical inquiry
  • Highlight Best Bet resources, like: Archives of Sexuality & Gender, Power to the People, and Archives Unbound: African American Studies Collections
  • Learn navigational tips for finding content relevant to your area of study
  • Understand how to leverage Learning Centers to increase engagement in your classes
