About this Event
Free EventOriginally named “Middle Plantation,” Williamsburg is one of America’s first planned cities and was founded as the capital of the Virginia Colony in 1699. It is the home to the oldest legislative assembly in the New World. The city has grown into a center of political, religious, economic and social life in Virginia. It is also a learning center, featuring one of America’s oldest colleges – William and Mary. Due to the relocation of the capital once more in 1780 to Richmond Virginia, Williamsburg has been better able to preserve its historical buildings and traditions. It is now known around the world as the prime center for the preservation and interpretation of American colonial history.
Attendees will receive the opportunity to spend two days and one night in Williamsburg, Virginia. After departing on Saturday morning, our group of Honors College students and faculty members will arrive in Scotland Neck to explore the Sylvan Heights Bird Park. We will then travel to Norfolk, Virginia where students will enjoy a lunch of their choice as well as visiting Nauticus Museum, now featuring the USS Wisconsin, a U.S. Navy Battleship. Once reaching the hotel students will be given time to roam the variety of historical sites at Colonial Williamsburg until dinner with donors and alumni of the Honors College. After dinner students will again be allowed to explore Colonial Williamsburg for the remainder of their night.
The next day, we will rise bright and early to get in line for the exciting rollercoasters and amusement rides at Busch Gardens. Among these rides is the Griffon, the world’s first floorless diving machine roller coaster. The ride can reach a speed of 75 mph. Yet, the tallest roller coast is Mach Tower at a “mere” 240 feet, which drops riders at 60 mph. After a few hours of thrills, we will travel back to Greenville.
