W. Keats Sparrow Writing Award Currently Accepting Entries

The W. Keats Sparrow Writing Award recognizes excellence in research and writing by students in East Carolina University's English 1100 and 2201 composition classes. The award is sponsored by the Friends of Joyner Library and is named in honor of Dr. W. Keats Sparrow, Professor Emeritus of English and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

The award amounts are:

 First place - $500

 Second Place - $300

 Third Place - $150

Paper Guidelines:

  • Papers must include a research component, using Joyner Library's resources.  
  • Eligible Papers: Research papers written for an ECU English 1100 or 2201 class during the Summer 2016, Fall 2016, or Spring 2017 semesters are eligible for consideration. 
  • There is no submission limit.  Please complete the paper submission checklist for each paper.
  • Papers may be submitted by the instructor (with the student's permission) or by the student.
