Black Revelry, presented by Dr. Derrais Carter
Friday, March 17, 2023
Seating: 6:30 pm
5 courses + performance lecture ($50 per person)
Through culinary and visual arts, this experience offers us a chance to gather and celebrate Black social life from a previous time. Using North Carolina painter Ernie Barnes' iconic Sugar Shack (1976), Dr. Carter brings out personal histories and intergenerational connections while guests enjoy a 5-course meal inspired by the experience at the club.
It wasn't until May 2022 that the painting broke into the mainstream art world by selling for $15 million at auction in New York. Prior to that, Barnes' painting was ubiquitous with Black interior life. This performance lecture will also explore how the painting has always inspired expansive social and economic arrangements that aren't legible to the market.
