CCSD FYI Series: Myth of the Slut

**PASSPORT APPROVED** In our society, women face a wide array of double standards when it comes to sexuality. While men are praised for their sexual exploits, women are shamed for engaging in any sort of sexual activity, especially outside the bounds of a committed relationship. This is more than just a nuisance – it is a cultural norm that results in real and serious violence against women. This presentation will explore the concepts of sluttiness and virginity, exposing them as social constructs, and show how these constructs lead to sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence against women. The presentation will also explore what is known as “purity culture” and challenge the societal belief that women who engage in sex outside of a narrow context are immoral, untrustworthy, and unclean. Finally, the presentation will cover the physical and emotional effects of slut shaming and offer tips on how to combat it, which will ultimately create a safer, more equitable environment for women.
