"Entering a 'White' Profession: African American Physicians in the Late 19th and Early 20th Centuries"
Monday, February 10, 2025 at 3:30pm
Presented by Todd L. Savitt, PhD, Professor of Bioethics & Interdisciplinary Studies.
The in-person lecture will be held in the Evelyn Fike Laupus Gallery, fourth floor of Laupus Library.
You may also attend the event virtually using this link. Please be aware that while streaming is available to all, only those with an ECU email address are able to access the live Q&A via Panopto. However, we will be taking questions from this email (frazierm24@ecu.edu) during the live session.
Presentation Description: Following the Civil War, opportunities for former slaves to enter law, medicine, teaching and other professions increased greatly. Several medical schools graduated a number of African-American physicians in the late 19th century. These newly minted physicians then faced the problem of opening viable medical practices among people, white and black, who had never seen black physicians before. This illustrated talk describes the reactions of black patients, white patients, and white physicians to the emergence of black physicians in their communities.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
