Marame Gueye (English) will present “Women’s Bodies as Battlefields in Senegal” on November 10 (7 pm, WebEx) as part of the new Gender Studies speakers series, GENSing.

Rape was criminalized in Senegal in 2020 when the country passed a law making a first-time conviction punishable by a minimum of 10 years in prison. But the lack of enforcement has only emboldened predators, and the crime is rarely reported or prosecuted despite the national debate over violence.

Dr. Gueye has become one of the international voices for the victims of sexual violence in her home country. She has been interviewed by numerous media outlets and is the author of the Washington Post op-ed “In Senegal, Women’s Bodies Have Become a Political Battleground.”

She will speak on this national crisis in Senegal and what is needed to help break the culture of silence and fear.
