ECU's Linda E. McMahon Distinguished Lecture will feature Dr. David Dalton, associate professor of Spanish at UNC-Charlotte, from 4 - 5 PM Nov. 9, in the Science and Technology Building, Room C309.
Dalton will discuss, Damián MIravete’s "Soñarán en el jardín" (They will dream in the garden) and Carlos Carrera and Sabina Berman’s "Backyard/El traspatio."
His presentation will examine how different writers and cineasts in Mexico have used ideas and tropes from science fiction and horror to speak out against violence against women throughout the country. Building on the term "robo sacer," Dalton theorizes a means through which characters in both of these works use technology to call into question those assumptions that have historically relegated women to the periphery.
The lecture is sponsored by the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences Department of Foreign Languages and also will be live-streamed via Webex (see information below).
Faculty interested in using the lecture for pedagogical purposes should contact Ms. Lily Johnson at johnsonlil21@ecu.edu for a copy of the video recording.
