Resistance and Resilience: Black Travel Past and Present

This interactive session will take participants on a journey through time exploring #TravelingWhileBlack (long before the hashtag existed). Participants will learn about the ways Black travelers navigated everyday racism while also working to change harmful political and social norms.

Charis Tucker is a Ph.D. student in the Howard Feiertag Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Virginia Tech University (and a 3-time graduate of East Carolina University!). Her research interests intersect race and tourism which she uses to explore topics related to the history of Black travel, tourism marketing (traditional and social media) and tourism entrepreneurship.

Light refreshments will be provided.
